Low self-esteem is something that we all struggle with at some point. For some of us, it’s the occasional feeling of unease, or failure when something has gone wrong. For others, it’s a constant companion. Feelings of failure and doubt even when things are going well, a tendency to only ever see the negatives in ourselves and a real issue with accepting compliments.
Unfortunately, self-esteem is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. When our confidence and self-esteem are high, and we’re filled with self-belief, things go well. We feel good about ourselves, we’re confident in our abilities and motivated to succeed, and so things tend to go better. When we’re low, we don’t feel motivated, we don’t want to go out and try new things, and we feel like we’re going to fail before we’ve even tried. We don’t give projects our all, because we’re scared of failure before we’ve even started. And so things do go badly, and our self-esteem falls even further.
There are countless ways to boost your self-esteem. Some of them are fast and easy, others more complex. They are certainly not one size fits all; however, and there’s no one big self-esteem boost that will magically help everyone. Instead, we should try different things, to find what works for us. Here are some of the most effective ways to boost your self-esteem, that you should consider trying when you are feeling low.
Learn Something New
Mastering a new skill is a fantastic way to feel good about yourself. There’s nothing better than knowing that you are good at something when it comes to raising your confidence. This can be anything from trying a new crafty hobby to learning a new language. Clear a little time here and there to practice, and as your skills start to improve your confidence will grow.
Target Specific Problems
Sometimes low self-esteem comes out of nowhere. But not always. Sometimes there’s something specific that makes us feel bad about ourselves. Perhaps you dislike a part of your body, have health issues, or you’ve got bored with your style. Watch these videos to see if plastic surgery could be an option, consider changing your style, getting a new haircut or having a makeover.
Write Down the Positives
When your self-esteem is low, it’s all too easy to get trapped in a pattern of only seeing negatives in yourself and only hearing when other people make negative comments about you.
Force yourself to see and hear the positives by writing them down. When someone pays you a compliment, write it down. Write down all of your accomplishments, everything that you like about yourself and everything that you are good at. You could even try writing down three good things at the end of every day. Look back over these lists when you need a boost.
Accept Your Weaknesses
We all have weaknesses. Things that we aren’t as good at, or would like to be able to do better. Some of these things you could work on and improve. But, sometimes it’s best just to accept that you will never be great at these things and learn how to accept yourself just as you are.
