I’ve been thinking about school lunches. My son is entering big school this year and I want to be the mom who makes him the coolest healthy lunch! I’ve gone shopping and spent hours on researching the best lunch box and containers. I also want to make healthy colorful snacks for the kids and here’s an example of what they had for an afternoon treat the other day.
I knew I wanted to go plastic free. Currently, my food containers at home are all made of food grade stainless steel. I use these products. Our water bottles are stainless steel too. I got rid of plastic glasses as well. Drawers liners are fabric. Before you think I’m a complete controlling paranoid mother, let me show you why I made the switch.
- Plastics leach toxins and migrate to food. “For many years, the plastics incorporating BPA were believed to be safe,” says Anila Jacob, MD, senior scientist with the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit advocacy organization. - Plastics are endocrine disruptors. The chemicals we should be most concerned about include BPA or Bisphenol A ad Phthalates, all of which are found in plastic. They cause early puberty and research has shown that girls menstruate at an unhealthy early age due to all these environmental toxins and hormones in food. Back to our topic on school lunch boxes and food ideas, I decided that on some days my kids would have hot lunch in a hot food container and on other days they could have an assortment of highly nutritious finger food.
