The idea of owning a motorhome and of driving off into the sunset, family – perhaps even pets – in tow to have adventures and make memories is certainly an appealing one. It’s no wonder that this is many people’s ultimate dream. Yet choosing the right motorhome to make that dream come true can be difficult; there are lots of different makes, models, and styles out there, and some will suit better than others. More than this, there are some other considerations to bear in mind that could be the difference between buying a motorhome and changing your mind altogether. Read on to find out what you need to think about before making this very large purchase.
Rent One First
Although you might be in love with the idea of driving a motorhome around and enjoying your life to the fullest, they are expensive – much more than cars, even if you just go for the basic version – and it would be a terrible waste if you bought one only to find that the reality didn’t live up to the dream version.
Because of this, it’s always better to try trailer rental first to make sure that a motorhome really is what you want to spend your money on. You can check out all the benefits without making a huge financial commitment. Also, if you’re not going to be able to use it that much, this might be a better option all round.
Parking
Motorhomes are big beasts – they have to be; people live in them, at least temporarily, and there has to be enough room for comfort and all the essentials. This means that you’re going to need a lot of space when it comes to parking. Do you have that space? It’s wise to check this out before you buy anything; it would be disappointing to bring it home and for it not to fit on your driveway. Also, there might be parking restrictions in your neighbourhood or street, so you’ll need to make sure you’re aware of them too. Essentially we’re saying that you might need to buy a smaller motorhome for this reason.
If you can’t fit the motorhome outside your house or you’re not allowed to, or you want a bigger one than size will allow for, you should be able to find storage space elsewhere, but this is an extra expense, so make sure it’s within your budget.
Licence
As with any motor vehicle, you’ll need a driving licence to drive a motorhome. It will have to be a category C1 licence at the very least, and if it’s more than 7.5 tonnes, you’ll need a category C licence instead.
Make sure you have the right license before you buy a motorhome as you’ll want to be able to legally drive it once you have it. If your license won’t allow it, you may need to take additional lessons and another test. Do you want to do this? If your dream is to own a motorhome, it’s the only option.
