Hi everyone! Hope your year is off to a good start? If you want it to get even better, I suggest you get into the habit of de-cluttering at the beginning of the year. I’ve written many blog post on de-cluttering and organizing the home before so I thought it would be fun to do something different. I’m going to tell you what you should NOT be doing while de-cluttering your home.
If you know that your home needs to be de-cluttered, then you may feel as though you have a serious task ahead of you. Staring at that pile of books, toys or clothes that need to be sorted and organized is not a fun sight but if you take your time and follow the tips below then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to tackle it.
Organise First
You have to make sure that you don’t go out and invest in a ton of storage boxes until you have actually been through what you have. Boxes, bins and storage stacks look great at the store, but they won’t do you much good if they don’t fit into your space. If you want to get around this then you need to assess what you need before buying a few bins to fill in the gaps. If you don’t then you may end up with a huge amount of empty containers that just clutter your space.
Don’t Try and Do Everything in a Day
Realize that you should never try to spend the entire day organizing your home. Not many people have the energy or even the focus to spend the whole day organizing. If you try then you may end up becoming frustrated and when this happens, you’ll work much less efficiently. It’s far better for you to spend a couple of hours at the weekend as opposed to spending a full day.
Try and Create Some Categories
You will also need to make sure that you sort things into categories. This could include donate, throw or even put into storage. Never keep bags that are designed to go to charity lying around. Instead, take them there as soon as it’s ready. If you leave bags lying around then eventually, they will just end up gathering dust and before you know it, they will end up right back where they were.
Regular Upkeep
You should never think that when the job’s done, it’s done. If you do, then you will feel like a failure when you have to do everything again in a few months’ time. You have to understand that the job is never usually done but you can help to give yourself a far more efficient way of doing it and this will really help you out in the long-term. I recommend sorting and spring cleaning every quarter. We accumulate things we don’t need quickly and when we wait too long things pile up and get unsightly.
It’s Good Enough
If you try and make your home look like the properties that are shown in magazines then this won’t be doing you any favors. You need to take note that homes like that are staged and that they aren’t practical at all. Instead aim for an organized home. The secret is to get into the habit of cleaning and putting things away immediately. Style your home in a lived in manner where you have a few decor and personal belongings around but never piles of clutter.
