After our Santorini trip, I thought I’d start looking into places to visit for our next travel and there’s nothing like the sea and blue waters. So I surfed.. not the ocean but the web to find beautiful travel spots.
The Caribbean Coast of Colombia… One of the most visited places in all of South America, mostly thanks to a little beach town named Cartagena. And while Cartagena is about as picturesque as it gets, there’s so much more to this magical region. Bolstering a perfect combination of stunning seas and unique landscapes, desired by locals and foreigners, all who seek to immortalize their visit with a perfect Instagram snapshot. If you’re headed down to the wild, wild west of Colombia and looking to get that perfect picture of your travelers, below you’ll find exactly what you need to succeed. Vamos!
Picturesque Places on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia
With thousands of miles of Caribbean coastline and a few massive mountains, there’s no denying you’ll find some stunning spots in this area of Colombia. There’s hundreds here! But if we’re being honest, the places below are certainly some of my favorites:
Isla Fuerte
Let’s start with one of my favorite destinations: Isla Fuerte. This small island keeps a pretty peaceful atmosphere. It’s only 30 minutes by boat from the nearby coast. And at only one-and-a-half miles long, there’s just not much going on. But that’s the beauty of it. It is said that it was sacked and abandoned by the Spanish many years ago. All types of ‘Pocahontas stories’ are told by elders of the island. The sea water is crystal clear and calm in the mornings, which allows local and foreigners visitors to do different type of aquatic and sub-aquatic activities.
- Diving
- Surf
- Windsurf
- Snorkeling
- Fishing
Definitely a place to escape from your day to day routine. In Isla Fuerte, you’ll find no transportation whatsoever. Just feet, bicycles, and boats. Many a donkey or two. But if you’re looking for a stunningly beautiful off the beaten path spot in the middle of the Caribbean, then Isla Fuerte is it.
The Old City in Cartagena
Night is approaching, the wind begins to blow. Transported in time. You get the feeling that at some point over the course of history, pirates tried to conquer the rich Spanish territories. A SENSATION words can’t describe. The waves crash just a few meters in front of you as you stare out into the ocean. The old city in Cartagena is a site to behold. The streets, business, music, delicious dishes and colonial architecture makes this spot one of the tops on the list.Plus, there’s “Insta-worthy” spots around every nook and cranny of this area.
Tayrona Park
Fantastic place with the best beaches of the Colombian Caribbean coast, surrounded by jungle and gigantic stones. The beauty of this place is hard to put into words, especially if you love a damn good beach — like I do. If you want to have one of the best travel experiences found in Colombia, Tayrona Park is a MUST. Camping here is even possible. Just make sure to bring a fully charged phone and camera. There’s little to no electricity or service out here. Those great photos will upload later.
Minca
Paradise on earth.. If you’re the type of person that likes to connect with nature while enjoying splendid mountain landscapes, Minca is a place you should visit. Full of rivers, waterfalls and streams of crystal clear water — all in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Make sure you visit the Pozo Azul, in the Minca river. Not only the landscapes are spectacular, the temperature is insanely good and swimming is perfect here. Photos? Lots of places, you’ll have a difficult time choosing favorite ones. But don’t forget to bring your insect repellent and sunscreen. Otherwise, your dream adventure will quickly become a nightmare.
The Castle in Cartagena
I want to saved the best for last, and that is the Castle in Cartagena. This Castle is one of the most visited attractions in all of South America. It is the largest defensive war infrastructure created in the Americas by the Spanish. So you can already imagine the amount of photos that must exist with the Hashtag — #CastilloSanFelipe. It has a wonderful view since it was built on the hill of San Lazaro. This allows you to have an overview of the entire city of Cartagena and get a killer photo. If you dream of a photo in one of the canyons pointing the sea waiting for a pirate ship, this is the place.By the way, that picture already exists:
PS: Just don’t forget your sunscreen!
That about does it.
Some of the best spots to take damn good pictures throughout the Caribbean coast of Colombia.
One of the prettiest parts in all of South America.
If you’re looking to get off the beaten path, get some amazing pictures, and have a great time…
I couldn’t recommend Cartagena, Parque Tayrona, and the like enough.
