I’ve recently been more aware of how we can minimize waste and be more eco-friendly at home and I thought of how much paper and poor trees get chopped down to make gift wrapping paper. I’ve been thinking about how we will be wrapping our Christmas presents this year and my daughter and I decided we’d go with fabric. I found some old dresses that I can cut and sew to turn into Christmas wrapper. There is a Japanese art form called Furoshiki which is the art of wrapping with fabric. With this, you can make use of tea towels, old curtains and what have you.
There are many other materials one can recycle into gift wrapper. Other ideas include old pages of books that you don’t use. News paper, magazine sheets and more.
This presents were wrapped using old maps. We all hardly use printed maps now with the availability of gps and apps. Making use of these add a hint of vintage and can make things quite special.
For the musicians out there, you can hunt around for old sheet paper and music books. They make lovely Christmas wrapping paper and is definitely eco-friendly.
The trick to pretty recycled gift wrapping is to decorate it with ribbons and tiny decor. Can I make a little confession? I recycle ribbons and little ornaments I get from other presents and keep them for me to use the next Christmas. This way I get to save and produce zero waste.
To make things even more special and intentional I plan on adding a note asking them to keep the cloth and recycle it.
I hope you all get inspired to be creative and go the extra mile with your gift wrapping this Christmas. We all need to do our part to help save the Earth by preserving trees and reducing waste.
