Each year we see a whole host of new trends appear in all aspects of our home design both in the interiors and in the garden. These garden trends aim to help our planet thrive and combat global warming.
It’s no surprise then that this year many of the gardening trends are centered around sustainability and being more friendly to our environment. As global warming continues to dominate the headlines, the need for us to treat our planet with more respect is becoming more apparent. Anything we can do to help our local environment and reduce the pressure on the planet as a whole is to be welcomed this year.

This new form of landscaping style has been created to conserve water, increase the utility of our garden and improve the beauty of our outdoor spaces. The idea is to utilize native plant species in our garden that naturally thrive in the local environment without human intervention.
When we landscape in this style we save up to 40% of the water we would usually use to garden. It also helps us to reduce costs over time by using plants that thrive even when there is a drought.
What’s more, designing a garden based on what lives naturally in your local area can be fun and interesting to put together. It will also benefit local wildlife too, especially bees and butterflies which are both currently struggling.
2. Vertical Gardening

As small living spaces become increasingly embraced by new homeowners, vertical gardening is sure to be a major trend for this year. People are realizing they don’t need huge houses or gardens to be happy but they also want the choice to grow their own plants and food.
Vertical gardening is a simple but effective answer to both of these needs. Using the small living spaces homeowners can utilize their space with specially built flower or veggie gardens that are taller than they are wide. Some are even upcycling old wooden pallets, standing them upright and using them as flower beds.
Vertical gardens are allowing those with small outdoor spaces, apartment balconies or storage sheds to still benefit from the pleasure of growing their own flowers and/or food.
3. Permaculture

For as long as many of you can remember the way in which we plant flowers and our veggies has always been to separate them into their own beds. This resembles the mass production of crops, also known as mono-cropping.
Now, permaculture, or companion planting, is becoming increasingly popular. The idea is that you plant a mix of plants that complement each other grow together in the same bed. This helps them to grow healthier and also supports local wildlife too.
Permaculture can effectively improve soil health, reduce pests, prevent weeds, attract pollinators, and promote healthier plants in abundance. Again, this trend is another reflection on our society’s desire to return to more natural and environmentally friendly ways of doing things. Permaculture is a great way to improve your local environment and support local wildlife.
