Happy New Year! It’s been over a week since my last blog entry. We went on a trip to some beaches up North, I was busy taking care of my two kids and had little time to myself. Arrived back home yesterday night and today I jumped right back to work. Had to go to my local fabric store and pick material for some curtains and two sofas for a client, went to a final casting for a television ad I got called for and attended a children’s party with my kids. Busy way to start the year, so many tasks to do, yet I am counting my blessings. How is this year going for you so far?
The color of the year for 2014 has been announced by Pantone to be PANTONE 18-3224 Radiant Orchid. As opposed to last years emerald green, this is a feminine color full of magical and whimsical elements suggesting luxury and imagination. A cross between mauve and fuchsia seems too intimidating to use at home right? I myself have some apprehensions but after doing some research and opening my mind to dream and imagine, I fell in- love with Radiant Orchid! Here are some tips on how to use this pretty color in your home:
1. Add radiant orchid with fabric.
Punctuate your space with furniture pieces dressed in orchid. Dining chairs, a love seat or ottoman in plush orchid fabric immediately adds a lot of fun to any space.

2. Combine with neutral colors like grey and white.
If you feel uncomfortable painting a whole wall with radiant orchid, consider using it with neutrals. Grey is a good color, and white is an obvious choice. This allows you to add touches of the color through soft furnishings, and in the photo above, a striped painted ceiling.

3. Paint cabinets or other accent wooden pieces.
Wood does not always have to be brown. Have more fun with color, suggest mystery and happiness with a splash of orchid on kitchen cabinets, or console tables and the like.
4. Accent an entire wall and add more of the color through other accessories.
A great way to add any bold color is to create an accent wall. This creates a focal point for the eye to dwell on. Compliment the accent wall by adding splashes of the same color through other accessories and decor around the house.
Radiant orchid works well with grey, white, mint, light yellow, pink or aqua blue. It compliments more masculine colors like hunter green and olive. I can also imagine it would look awesome with silver, brass and copper decor. The key is to use it sparingly or to go exaggerated with color- blocking. I would never use it with bright red, bright green or orange. It really is a fun color and is an aspect of purple that is easier to use due to its pink and grey undertones. I have a feeling my next project will have splashes of radiant orchid..
