The Philippines has many of the best beaches in the world. I could soak in the sun all day but beach skin care is top priority. There is something relaxing about being in the sun, enjoying the white sand and staring at the blue and green ocean hues. However, now that I am in my thirties, I take care of my skin more. Staying out in the sun is no longer an option but I still find ways to soak and enjoy the beach life. Here are the things I do to take care of my skin while enjoying the beach:
- Wear huge sunnies and a big sun hat. I was on the search for classy big sun hats. My favorite is a big black woven hat from H&M. Here are a few other top selctions.

This neutral straw hat by Janessa Leone.
2. Invest in good sunscreen and lather liberally. My dermatologist told me that I need to be putting 1 teaspoon of sunscreen on my face and I should re apply every 2-3 hours. I have natural freckles and they increase under the sun so I make an effort to pay attention to my skin. I believe that finding the perfect sunscreen to complement your needs can take time, trial and error. I personally love VMV hypoallergenics Sport 70 for my body. It has a non greasy formula but is potent and has all the necessary ingredients of good sunscreen. I can use it on my face and on my kids too. I also like Coola Organic Face Minerall Sunscreen available at Just Green or I herb. It has a light cucumber scent and is very gentle on my skin. It is non greasy and I can wear it on regular days under makeup. When looking for sunscreen make sure it contains ingredients that block both UVB (ultra violet B) and UVA (ultra violet A) sun radiation. According to skincancer.org, “Intermittent, intense UVR exposure, often producing sunburn, is believed to be more closely associated with melanoma than is chronic sun exposure. One blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence doubles the risk of melanoma later in life; five sunburns by any age doubles the risk as well.”
If you must pay attention to your skin, you must also pay attention to your lips and hair. Dry chapped lips from the sun or wind is a nasty effect you want to avoid by using good quality chapstick. I like to use organic brands that moisten lips with natural ingredients. Look for one that contains a good SPF and protection against UVB and UVA as well. As for my hair, I normally use natural oil based products to keep my hair strands hydrated. I’ve used products from Kerestase’ and now I am using Argan Oil from France.
My friends in Hong Kong often ask me about the Philippine beaches. I never truly appreciated our beaches until I realized how beautiful they really are compared to those of other Asian countries. We used to go to El Nido Resorts in Palawan very often. My husband proposed to me on a sandbar behind Lagen Island in El Nido. Known for their superb service, beautiful sea cottages and vibrant marine life, El Nido Resorts is indeed one of my favorites!
Another place I truly love is where we actually got married. Shangri- La Mactan in Cebu is simply a place of relaxation and paradise. It has good food, a variety of activities on the resort, a kids’ club and an amazing Spa! If you are looking for an all in one fuss free relaxed vacation, Shangri- La in Mactan is one to consider. It is very close to the International airport too!
We visited Amorita Resort in Bohol last year and I loved it. Bohol has one of the best islands in the Philippines and Amorita resort hit the spot with their good service, well- sized stylish suites and good food. It is a small resort but they had great service while amenities where straight- forward. Just a few steps down a flight of rustic stairs will take you to the beach where you can enjoy the water and walk to experience local life, some cafes and night bars.
Hope you get to visit one of these beach resorts in the future! Happy weekend!
