Space and storage are always a problem in most homes. You can never have too much storage while space is a luxury. A trained designer and space planner will easily spot areas where you can gain more space but with these simple steps, you can make them happen in your own home too.
1. Make use of vertical space.
Talk to your architect and engineers and tell them you wish to use space that would otherwise be used for roof structure. There are several ways to maximize space vertically when it is planned ahead of time. Creating lofts and bunk beds are other examples too.
2. Recess storage space into thick walls.
Shelves even if they are shallow will serve great purpose. There are lots of things you can put on shelves like bottles, canned goods, toiletries etc. Just make sure you never cut into structural posts and walls with pipes and electric wiring.
3. Make use of space under the stairs.
Stairwells have space that can be converted into small bathrooms, storage cabinets or even libraries and office nooks. Planning this before hand will give you good functional space. You can always build it in during your next house renovation too.
4. Make use of dead space.
A structural post that juts out will leave a recessed portion between walls. This can be used for a closet or a small work nook. Look for other dead space. No matter how narrow, they can provide storage. I find a lot of dead space useful for shoe cabinets and book shelves.
5. Install a platform and create storage under it.
An easy way to gain storage is to raise your bed or create a platform for a reading nook or elevated seating area. The space below will be enough for drawer space.
